Background

Women in Water and Sanitation Network was launched on 23rd February 2016 with the objective of reinforcing the role of women in management of water and sanitation in Kenya. The association is recognized by the ministry of water and sanitation to support women Agenda in the water sector.

The association held its first conference in September 2016 with the theme “The role of Women in Water and Sanitation Towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals”. The conference focused on addressing the vision of Women in Water and Sanitation in post 2015 development goals and 2010 constitution, building partnership for gender equity, and overcoming challenges as women leaders in water and sanitation sector as part of gender alignment.

The conference was attended by 163 participants from government departments represented by the Ministry of water and irrigation, Ministry of health, Ministry of public service, gender and youth and the Ministry of environment and natural resources, water service providers, non-governmental organizations in Water and Sanitation sectors and development partners UNICEF and UNEP, academic institutions, as well private sector actors. The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Public service, Gender and Youth, Mrs Sicily Kariuki graced the closing ceremony.
The key areas identified during the first conference as critical for women empowerment were:
  1. Engagement at policy level
  2. Couching and Mentorship to enhance Gender inclusion in leadership
  3. Communication and publicity
  4. Resource Mobilization
  5. Knowledge Management
The results of the conference were disseminated and discussed During the Kenya Water Week 2016 organized by the Ministry of water and irrigation and Water Services Trust Fund where WIWAS was invited as a session convener on gender and services delivery.

The upcoming regional summits are a follow up of the first women in water and sanitation conference and the Kenya water week discussions. From the discussions, it is clear that gender issues are vary depending on culture, traditions and regions. Regional water summits will provide a platform for discussing specific regional gender issues and actual interventions requirements in defining gender questions in water and sanitation service delivery.
Women in Water and Sanitation in Collaboration with Council of Governance secretariat are looking for partners for the organizing of the summit.

Partner with us through:
  1. Sourcing for sponsorship
  2. Invitation of delegates
  3. Obtaining exhibitors.
Given the basic necessity of water to sustain life and its central role in the provision of a wide range of services, water is a crucial and cross-cutting factor in the SDGs. Active participation and cooperation of all sectors, levels of government, and civil society are critical for ensuring better management and allocation of water resources. While recognizing the differentiated responsibilities between each player.

The regional Water Summit presents an opportunity for:
  • Inclusive approach for water cooperation
  • Innovative approaches for water cooperation
  • Mobilizing political will and commitment to address water issues.
  • Open discussion of the issues shaping our water resources today and strong citizen participation.
  • Promoting a culture of consultation and increasing participative capacities will help to deliver benefits in all areas, including collaborative water management.
Water should provide a reason for trans county cooperation since the existing boundaries can’t not contain or demarcate the flow. The violence over water is seldom a strategically workable or economically viable option.
